Didn’t Like It“After having read Trainspotting and The Acid House, I had to give up on this Irvine Welsh novel half way through because of the deep misogyny inherent in all of the male characters. I just couldn't stomach it. It was as though Welsh had taken a step too far for me.” see full review » see other reviews » |

The characters were great: in-depth, multi-faceted, with hilariously nuanced personalities and problems. I loved the Scottish-projects dialect it was written in. Loved everything about it. One of my favorites now. I plan to read the rest of Welsh's books.”

Welsh has a way with characters that instantly invokes empathy. And the portion where Carl Ewart 'gets his hole' for the first time was painfully hilarious - so true to life.”

Welsh is a master of coming up with some of the most bizarre and intriguing scenarios. The characters are really well developed in this rather mild-paced yet constantly engaging novel.”

At the outset, pushing through the authentic scottish dialogue was more than a chore. But by fifty pages in it was flowing naturally and I became engrossed with the story. Epic in scope with some of the most realistic and well-defined characters I can remember reading.”
