I recommended this to my mother and she loved it, too! EVERYTHING about it is perfect! I'm sorry, but I don't know how else to describe such a magnificent book! Read it and perhaps you can...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“My favorite. Every time I read it there are more details to enjoy. the juxtaposition of historical fact and modern fiction makes for a great story.
Almost time to read it again!”
“This transports you from now and into the past, everyone fighting over chess pieces that are worth dying for.”

In 1790, Mireille is selected as a nun to hide pieces from the Montglane Service, as they hold a dark secret. She is not prepared for the events to follow. In 1970, Catherine goes to a fortune teller at a New year's eve party unaware that today she will be inducted into the game. The goal to reunite the Montglane Service and reveal its mystical secrets.
When I got this book it was mainly just because I needed a book tagged 'France' for PBT's 12 days of Christmas Challenge. I got a bit paranoid after seeing its 598pg length and that it was reccommended for Da Vinci Code lovers (D.V.C. seems a bit complex for my liking even though I confess I've never read it). However when it came down to it this was complex but very well set out and explained repeatedly. Everything eventually seemed to click into place. The eight, the pieces, the players. At points I did however feel annoyed that half of the conversations some of which involved no chess referred to chess. I think I would have liked it more if I had more time to read it.

“Have read it twice! Much better than the Da Vinci Code and written long before.”
