I have picked the holy bible of many obvious reasons. It is the book I have based my religious beliefs off of and if I could only remember one book I would remenber this one.

The old Testament is full of some wild and crazy stories such as the story of Judah and his daugter-in-law Tamar (check it out!). I also like the story of the talking donkey who sees angels and reprimands his master (in a Shrek-like fashion). But reading it helps to understand the historical backdrop to a lot of the problems in the Middle East between the Jews and the Muslims.

Never gets old. Always new wisdom to mine from this book, always new insights, always more layers of meaning. Worthy of a lifetime of study.

The Bible is a progressive revelation. It is like the development of a child. As the child grows and matures, the ground work that was laid is the guiding principle as he/she builds the house of their life and character.
People do not live by the WHOLE bible because some of its details no longer apply, but the principles do, primarily as it relates to that part of the Law dealing with sacrifices and the Temple cult. By his death Christ made obsolete the sacrificial system. And that consequently fulfilled all the requirements of the Temple cultus. Christians do not live by the sacrifice of animals, but now we all live because of the sacrifice of Jesus, prefigured in the animal sacrifices of ancient Israel.
