  • Patrick Lewis: A young boy, turned man who began life near Bellrock before traveling to Toronto. Became a "searcher" for Ambrose Small in 1924, among other jobs, such as a tunnel digger, a dynamiter, and a tanner. The thread character that weaves the stories of this novel together. His father, Hazen Lewis is both a dynamiter and a farmer and is a minor character.
  • Rowland Harris: Commissioner of Public Works whose first child is the "Prince Edward" bridge/ Bloor Street Viaduct. Later had the dream of a tunnel beneath Lake Ontario. He represents certain power and political standing.
  • Nicholas Temelcloff: The bridge daredevil that will complete difficult jobs with no fear. Later owns and works in a Bakery. He is an immigrant from Greece/Macedonia
  • Ambrose Small: Canadian Theatre magnate, millionaire who disappeared December 1919. Sparked incredible investigation.
  • Clara Dickens: radio actress, lover of Ambrose Small
  • Alice Gull: Friend of Clara.Companion of PatrickCato, is her past lover, Hana's father, a memory and a minor character.
