i love every book by Burke that is a robicheaux novel. His others, where the central character is someone else, are not as good, but the Dave Robicheaux series is just my favorite detective series of all time

james lee burke has been writing these stories for 50 years, but when you read it, you smell the water in the little channel, the bait, and something between wet cement floors and the distinctive damp hemp

in a sense, if you have read one burke book you have read them all, but not the way certain romance and western writers make that true. each of his tales are a fun read, a thrill and a good mystery, it is only that that is true of all of them. this was my first burke, but about 20 later, ok, maybe not 20, but plenty,l i still love finding one i havent read.
