this book is incredibly hard to categorize: fantasy? horror? mystery?

whatever the label, it's full of magic and memorable characters, from a retired gunslinger, a voodoo princess, zombie dog, and even dinosaurs.
the unpredictable storyline and surprise twists really make cory's...

This is the first book I ever read by Robert McCammon. I went in having no idea what to expect and was totally blown away. While it is easy to see similarities in his work and King's, it is vastly different in so many ways. This could be the story of one of the boys from "Stand by Me"...but there is an inexplicable difference that makes this a special read and perhaps one that deserves more attention.

What an outstanding story ! I loved the characters and thoroughly enjoyed every page. McCammon is a fabulous author and I look forward to reading more of his treasures.

    4,5/5

It's like a kid's horror version of one hundred years of solitude. I enjoyed it nevertheless.

There is no way that any review could live up to this book.
It is utterly fabulous. It reels you in and never lets you go.
It will bring up every good memory that you had while growing up. The feeling of freedom you experienced riding your bike, exploring wooded areas and just generally being a kid.

One of my favorite quotes of all time comes from this book:

"We are born able to sing to birds and read the clouds and see our destiny in grains of sand. But then we get the magic educated right out of our souls. We get it churched out, spanked out, washed out, and combed out. We get put on the straight and narrow and told to be responsible. Told to act our age. Told to grow up, for God's sake. And you know why we were told that? Because the people doing the telling were afraid of our wildness and youth, and because the magic we knew made them ashamed and sad of what they'd allowed to wither in themselves."

Do yourself a favor. Read this book. Get a little of that magic back.

When I finished the last line of the story, a pity feeling stuck me because I want more and more of Cory Meckenson's life. This book was really recapturing the magic of my childhood although I did not surpass my life as Cory but by the end, the story brought me something special, very special feelings.

This was a good book...as I like everything that I've ever read by RM. But for me it just didn't live up to the hype that it has generated for years. In my opinion, SWAN SONG and all three of the MATTHEW CORBETT books are much better. Anyway, just my opinion...dosen't mean I'm right. I certainly don't believe so many people could be wrong about how wonderful the book is, but for me it just didn't catch that fire that my favorite books do. Having said all that, it is definitely a better than average book that fans of just about any genre would enjoy.
