  • Davy Ray: Cory's hot headed friend.
  • Cory Mackenson: Cory is the 12 year old narrator of the story and he lives in the small town of Zephyr with his father, mother, and dog Rebel. In the beginning of the book, Cory and his father stumble upon a murder during a morning milk run. Cory becomes appalled that his little town could have a murderer in its midst. During the rest of the novel, Cory goes on a mission to find out which one of his lovely neighbors is a cold blooded murder. The journey that Cory goes on to find the killer shows the reader how life was like in the 1960's and how a kid matures over time.
  • Kara Dahninaderke: Mrs. Lezander is Dr. Lezander's wife and is a good piano player and in the end of the book it is revealed that she was a Nazi war criminal along with her husband.
  • Johnny Wilson: Cory's friend who is of Native American descent. Johnny gets in a fight with the Branlin brothers about halfway through the novel and ends up getting extremely hurt... hurt enough where he cannot hang out with his friends for long periods of time for a while. 3/4 of the way through the novel, he gets back at the Branlins when they throw one of his most prized arrowheads onto the playground at school. Johnny wins the fight and dethrones the Branlins from their throne of being the scariest kids in Zephyr.
