I read this book as a part of a freshman writing course. The focus was on identity and diversity with Appalachia as a sub-topic. The novel is about how industial greed fueled by the machine of government power robbed people of their constitutional rights, heritage, and dignity. The events of the coal mining industries devouring of Appalachia are harrowing, but softened by the sub-plot of a love triangle which humanizes the story. It is a good read. I found it easy, but the Appalachian dialect may be challenging for some, but definately worth it.
