This book is early Rick Moody. I think he's still finding his voice. Garden State (his first book) is pretty awful but as you read through his work he gets significantly better. I've read almost all his stuff and I think The Ring of Brightest Angels Around Heaven is his best. He does better with short stories. This book was good if you want a quick, page-turning airplane read and if you grew up in the 70s you'll have an added appreciation for it. If you want a good piece of literature, look elsewhere--Moody's not there yet with this (his second) book.
