In “Possession,” A. S. Byatt crafts an unforgettable novel that manages to succeed at being a dozen books at once. It’s a page-turner about literary scholarship, of all things – an epistolary detective story. It’s a dazzling pastiche of 19th century literature, a biting satire of academia, a...

I could not finish this book! And I always finish a book. It was resplendent with minutiae, seemed like the end of term papers of a literature student, was self involved with its own writing, and just uninteresting. The story itself, that which I discerned to be the story from the few times it...

Read this with a book club in high school, and none of us enjoyed it. It was us analyzing literature... about people analyzing other people literature. It was long and tedious and nothing really seemed to happen. I wouldn't recommend this, especially if you lean more toward whirlwind romances, action, or suspense, because this book has none of the above.

Thoroughly engaging, lively and thrilling piece of historical fiction. A joy for any English teacher or lover of nineteenth century poetry.

I love the literary style of her writing, the historical references and the poetic nature of the story, but...I must admit I was bored... Slow story, slow plot.

At certain points while reading this book i felt as if i needed a literature degree. I really enjoyed the part of the story happening in the present time between the two researchers. Unfortunately i found many of the flash back sections hard to read and difficult to follow. That's why i only gave it 2 stars. While i enjoyed the story , it wasn't nearly as gripping as it should have been for me.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's a love story-- one that "is" and one that "could have been" and it's also a detective story with a suspenseful plot line. This is the book that introduced me to A.S Byatt, which caused me to be very interested in her other works. The book showcased a play of brilliant literary style and verve that I haven't come across with in most romance novels I've read. I love how the author was able to add a touch of a surreal, almost dream like quality to the sequences in the book involving Ash and Christabel, against the backdrop of a very real and modern London. It's not strictly a book on romance of course. I loved how it gave me insight on the art and how it flourishes courtesy of the human heart.

This book has left me day dreaming. It's thrilling to read about literary scholars and researchers become unwitting characters in this detective-love story.

One of the best novels that connect two plots, each in a different time. It claims to be a romance, I disagree.
