“The feelings this book describes are so real that I could almost feel that I was trapped with the girl. Impressive.”
“Please, people, PLEASE. Whenever reading a book that wasnt published in the year that yuo're reading it, consider the time, mindset, place in culture thatthe book was written in. At the time the Collector was written in, serial killers had not yet reached the fore front of modern culture the way it has. To judge any vintage novel by 21st century standards is begging to be disappointed. The Collector is a fascinating take on a subject matter that was pretty much taboo in its time. Alfred Hitchcock's Psyco was shocking at the time ( same period, Get it!) In order to get the most of any book written before one was born, the reader must take themselves into the wirter's world, not try to drag the work into the reader's world to get the most out of it. Gee. Why didn't Heathcliff just pick up his cell phone and call Cathy from America? Why didn't Scarlett O'Hara just put on her jogging suit and run to Atlanta with her vitamin water?”
“Well, the plot wouldn't have impressed me much, but for the news I saw on TV the day after finishing this book - about an Austrian man who kept his own daughter the way it is descibed in "The Collector". Horrible coincidece of fiction and life.I liked the structure of the novel: no remarks from the author, two points of view (that of the "collector" and that of the victim). Though somehow it reminds me of Süskind's "Das Parfum".”
“IMHO to read any writer with a body of work behind him/ her it always pays to start at the beginning. In this case with THE COLLECTOR which is a story based upon real life. But what Fowles did of course is twisted it to fit his vision of what would happen when a young man kidnaps young women, locks them up in a dungeon-like basement, treats them like princesses and then kills them. Pretty chilling. Fowles did a truly inventive device in THE COLLECTOR ... he broke the narrative into two parts: first you hear his side and then you hear Miranda's side. The two perspectives are of course polar opposites but when you really read MIranda's words you will begin to see changes in her reactions to what her plight is. By the end she understands that being 'free' comes from within and she focuses on that part of life. The title refers to his butterfly collections, but is also an ironic message about the kidnappings that came before Miranda and will come after she dies. I agree with varghese k that THE FRENCH LT'S WOMAN is a must read and the film is extraordinary. I would also add THE MAGUS to the list along with WORMHOLES.ENJOY”
