Heard a lot about this popular novel written about two decades ago in the backdrop of post independence.

A decent book and could have been very good in my eyes, but unbearably long when it didn't really have to be. I love a good big novel, but this book completely loses focus at times and goes off into long discourses in politics which reads like a lesson at times. Also, the modernist in me sort of balked at what I felt was an attempt to vindicate the older or traditional mindsets. However, it's still a worthwhile read if you're willing to put up with the inordinate size and at times straying plotlines.

Looong book, but I enjoyed it and I'm going to miss all the characters.

Very profound. A length book but it weaves each character that you start liking them and the book grows on you. The friendship between Maan and Firoz and the character of Kabir and Lata are be the highlights. Mrs Rupa mehra shall represent the typical Indian mother, full of emotional atyachaars. Very profound if one can wade through the large volume.

A big book but I loved it to bits, you really live with the characters and feel for them despite the fact that it takes place in a country you don't belong to.

Reading this book is like swimming or diving in the sea. First slowly waded into the water, meet up with the neighbors, go deeper, the water is all around you and then plunge into a completely different, amazing world called India. Once you think all this world of colors, smells, sounds and overall feelings of love and hatred, shall be convened with numerous characters and their pains, joys, with spring and fall of a sudden you get to the last page and wonder what happened next ...

This is a tremendous novel, a masterpiece and I'd recommend it to anybody who likes grand classics like *Vanity Fair* or *Anna Karenina.* It is on the level of Tolstoy or Mann, or at least Victor Hugo. Good stuff. Why isn't this book widely read (or maybe it is - how would I know?)
