The story begins with Alice Kingsley as a child, awakened by another dream of her previous time in Wonderland, unknown to her at this time. She is some comforted by her father, who assures her when asked if she is mad, that yes she is but the best people usually are.

Some years later it seems that her father has passed. She is joined by her mother on the way to a fancy party, thrown by one of her father’s close friend and college, his snotty wife, and stiff as a board son (Dawlish). To Alice’s dismay she soon finds the reason for the celebration is her engagement party.

After a walk in the garden, with her soon to be mother in law, she sees the white rabbit. Upon satisfying her curiosity and trying to follow the rabbit she soon discovers her sisters no good boyfriend in the garden with another woman. Right after her sister has tried to convince her that she’ll want a good man like her husband. HA! After pleading with her not to rat him out, she is found by Dawlish, who had requested for her to meet him by the gazebo. When she is there he indeed pops the question. Dazed for a moment by all the voices in her head giving her advice Alice wisely says she needs a minute.

She takes of again after the white rabbit, and again falls down the rabbit hole. There is the scene again with the table and the cake. Unknown to her some of the occupants are watching her wondering if she is indeed the *right* Alice. When getting it right she comes to a garden, and are greeted by the Tweedles and the Mouse.

After some debate concerning who she is, they decide that the Hatter will likely know if she’s the real one or not. They leave after the caterpillar shows them the scroll with Alice fighting the Jabberwocky on Fribulous Day. Meanwhile the Red Queen, who has taken over Wonderland is made aware of Alice return. She orders her knave to find and behead her. The Knave sets off what the guard dog, who he in turn bribes for freedom of his wife and pups.

Alice is lead to the Hatter’s tea party. The Hatter is a little skeptical. While they are having tea the Knave approaches and the Hatter shrinks Alice and stuffs her in a tea pot.
He and the others act, well.. okay not so much an act, the crazy part and the dog who is on their side leads the Knave in another direction to throw him off.

The Hatter decides to lead her personally to the castle, by way of hat. When she crosses over the Red Sea to the Red Queen’s castle (Oh yes and by the way somewhere in there they are all chased by a Jubjub bird) they all seem to be playing a croquet game. The Rabbit notices Alice and gives her something to adjust her size, but she eats to much and shoots up. The Queen likes her largeness *having a abnormally large head herself* and makes her her new favorite.

The Knave doesn’t recognize her as Alice, but rather Um, because of her new size. The Hatter however is brought in for questioning. He tap dances around the questions and begins to charm the queen into *hatting* her, which bys him and Alice some time. Alice is told to look for the Vorpal Sword which is hidden somewhere in the castle. Just her luck it’s in the pen that holds the Bandersnatch. She distracts it with it’s eye, that the mouse had cut off earlier it their chase. Alice finds the sword in a box, but by them the scratch from the Bandersnatch is starting to get more infected, and she blacks out.

When she awakes the dog is licking the infection clean, and the wond has gotten better. She goes to free the Hatter, but is stopped by the Red Knave who makes a advance at her. When she tries to free the Hatter she is found out. The Queen is furious. The Hatter tells Alice to go on without him, and he is sentenced to be hung the next day, and he and the pups and the dogs wife are thrown in jail.

Alice is cornered, but by the help of the Bandersnatch and the dog she escapes and goes to return the sword to the White Queen. The White Queen is glad to have the sword back but she needs a champion to fight the Jabberwocky and she can’t do it because she’s taken a vow of non violence. She can’t hurt another living creature.

Thanks to the Chesure Cat, the Hatter is freed. The Hatter reveals the people in the court to be a bunch of *fakes* and then he runs off to the White Queen’s castle. When they are all reunited, he and Alice have a talk. She says she will miss them when she returns. She still thinks she’s dreaming. The next day they are trying to decide who will fight the Jabborwocky. Alice is upset and runs off, because of fear.

She has a conversation with the caterpillar, who is about to transform, and all of a sudden she remembers that her dreams weren’t dreams at all. They were memories. She really HAD been here before. She is now ready to fight the Jabberwocky. Long story short she of course wins. The Hatter does his dance. The Red Queen and the Knave are sentenced to a far away place, to which the Knave tries to stab the Queen. Funny. The Hatter tells Alice she could stay. She considers it, but she knows she has matters to take care of back home.

When she gets back she’s back at the party. She straight up tells Dawlish no. He’s not the man for her. Her aunt that she needs some psychiatric help. Her mom that she’ll be okay. Then there’s one more thing she has to do. At the end of the book she’s taken up her father’s plans where he left out extending his trade route. She sees the butterfly and says “Hello Absolum.”

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, a easy eight and a half stars. If you love the original. If you love bizarre. If you love dark. This is definitely a must read for all you Alice lovers. What is it about these characters, that is so humorously sarcastic, witty, and a little rude that just captivates? After I saw the movie, as movies sometimes do it left open spaces, that perhaps on a second viewing could be filled. But reading the book, which came directly from the screen, I was able to visualize and have that much more clarity of what I had previously watched. I always find it best to read the book first any way. I couldn’t put this book down. The only thing I didn’t like was in comparision to the original Alice in Wonderland, and Through the Looking Glass the story didn’t seem as full. It just felt like something was missing. It did have a lot of the characters but I would have liked for the book and movie to have included more of them. But I definitely recommend this book. You won’t be sorry!
