As an aspiring writer, I was very intrigued with the development of her characters and how easily it was to connect with them emotionally. It's one of those books you will look forward to reading at the end of a long day.” see full review » see other reviews » |

“ My Short Story class read this book. I enjoyed the juxtaposition of Indian versus American ideals and culture. A great collection of stories. ”

The book was good but it was definitely not as earth shattering and perspective-altering as everyone and their mother had me believe. Sure, most of the stories were interesting and engaging, but they were also pretty short and (for me) lacked a strong development. They were too short for me to care deeply about the characters and feel terribly moved when something happened.
It's undeniable that Jhumpa Lahiri has some skills as every story is written from a different perspective and is placed in a very different locale, but I mostly felt the stories were ... flat. And I am a stranger living in a strange land, so I should be able to empathize.
All in all, you should definitely read it, but don't expect it to change your life. ”
“best read..”

All of the 9 short stories moved me, but they seemed to get even better as the book went on. My favorites were This Blessed House, and The Third and Final Continent.”
