A "The grass is always greener on the other side" book. Lots of interesting things to discuss in this story. I was amazed by the scope of emotions the story invoked. It would be a great discussion book for a book club. Although the characters aren't exactly likeable, I found the book still...

View of how traditions and government regulations affect the life of a Chinese doctor's life.

Good book, found it difficult to get through - slow pace.

The characters were well developed although somewhat pathetic (but true to life) and the overall premise and cultural aspects were interesting, but it didn't have much of a plot. By halfway through, I just wanted one of them to get it over with and do something about their situation. It just got kind of tiresome.

so slow and tedious - i wanted the characters to *do* something and act, but the books just watched as the main characters just existed.

Frustrating, but I think this is intentional. The author very effectively conveys sense of life during the cultural revolution as stifling, oppressive, suffocating and the reader feels the pain. A well crafted book, all the more impressive because Ha Jin came to the US in his 20s.

Pretty writing. I like most Chinese-based stories, but in this case, you really are waiting for the end... and then some.
