Rick Bragg is one of my favorite authors. Born and raised in the South his books are very easy for me to relate to. This is a wonderful story of his Mother and the close relationship they had and the pride she had for her son. They lived a life of poverty and difficult times but they were loved.

I actually didn't "finish" it as the notes say here. I just couldn't get into yet another memoir disclosing the goings on of a dysfunctional family with an abusive alcoholic father.

Moving, funny, poetic, wonderful imagery, great writing, loving tribute to his mother.

Definitely worth reading, whether you're from the South or North. Gives a different perspective of what it's like to grow up in the South.

Loved it! I think you have to be from the south to fully appreciate it though. Wonderful read!

He is an amazing writer, so this is a good read. But, there's very little plot, so it's not exactly thrilling. Still, if you love the deep south, or stories of reporters, this is interesting enough for a beach read.

It wasn't outstanding and yet 10 years later I still think about this mother and her son.
