“Rick Bragg's childhood unknowingly prepared him for the incredibly wild ride, both good and bad in his lifetime and the path he created for himself today. With deep honesty and powerful writing, he opens about growing up dirt poor in Northeastern Alabama, living life as a travel reporter, winning the Pulitzer in 1996 and doing what he always did best - write. As accomplished as Rick has become, we still see glimpses of a man who carries doubt cast from the stark poverty that haunted his earlier years. Rick is one of the most successful writers, yet probably the most unpretentious. I was hesitant to begin the book because I was worried about a story filled with child abuse. It was my good fortune to read about Rick Bragg, the sacrifice his mother endured and the life experience he shared. ”

By turns hilarious and tear-inducing, this is the wonderful story of Rick Bragg's Alabama childhood. Honest and painful and beautifully written. Highly recommended for all southern readers and writers. Adults. ”

His father is an absentee alcoholic, who only seems to hang around long enough to get his wife pregnant before leaving her again. The mother sacrifices to keep her children fed and sheltered.”
