Cold Mountain

by Charles Frazier

This unabridged audio version of Cold Mountain, read by author Charles Frazier, deserves at least as much acclaim as the bestselling print edition, which won the National Book Award. The tale chronicles a Confederate army deserter's search for home and love in the last days of the Civil War.
Much has been made of the story's homage to The Odyssey, the origins of which are found in an... (read more)

"At the first gesture of morning, flies began stirring."

So begins one of my favorite reads of the past few years. I loved the characters, the language, the setting. I found it to be funny in places, horrifying in others, and altogether memorable to the end. I was also intrigued by the parallels to other hero stories like The Odyssey. Thumbs up from this reader.

This book had a weird writing style, which was at times rather confusing. However, it was an interesting story.

Listening to this book took a little adjustment since Mr. Frazier's voice is a slow southern voice. Once I got used to his cadence, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. His voice was perfect for the characters. There was one character they couldn't portray in the movie that was so real for me in the book - the land of Cold Mountain. I figured it for a fictious place that Frazier had made alive. About a year after I read the book, my husband and I, and a couple of friends, were on a road trip through the Blue Ridge. We were up near Mount Pisgah. I told my friends, who had also read the book, that I could just feel that this was where the real Cold Mountain would have been. Within 5 minutes we passed a small blue highway sign that said "Cold Mountain!" It was goosebumps time! We stopped at a state tourist info center and looked at a map - Cold Mountain is real. That's how good this book was - I recognized the place from the book.

This is one of the few times I actually liked the movie better than the book and that's not saying much. There were only a few points in the story when I really cared about what was going on. About half way through I wished I was a person who could stop reading a book in the middle, but I have a hard time not finishing a book. I'm glad I kept reading because at least I'm not a quitter, but I don't feel like I gained much by reading this book.
Most of the chapters surrounding Inman, I could have really cared less. I was really tired of the trompsing through the woods stuff. I understand what the author was doing with this book, I just didn't find it entertaining, entralling or inspiring in any way.

I was anxiously awaiting the tragic ending...only to be surprised.

This book was OK. There were parts I found very riveting and other times the book seemed to crawl. It is overall a good read. I also think it was a valuable history lesson and a good example of life during the civil war.

I've tried reading this book twice, and could just not get into. I didn't like the style of writing and I didn't connect to the characters.

Oh my gosh, this was awful. So so boring and so so nothing happens. Oh my gosh. I cannot even believe they made this into a movie, which was, by the way, so so boring.
