I think it was brutal with the reality of humanity, but I found it to be very interesting. I didn't like the literary style of not using quotation marks for character conversation, that made it a little distracting to me. I did like the way it danced inbetween the stories of the characters. I found both of their journies to be significant and thought provoking. I did feel that the end was abrupt and a bit chaotic, but overall, not a bad read. ”

Yes | No“Set toward the end of the Civil War, this book gives insight into the effects of the war on the every-day life of regular people, and how they must adjust. Ada was a wealthy, educated, pampered young woman at the start of the war, but after her father dies, she finds herself alone and in debt. Lacking any practical skills, she is unable to work the farm that her father left her, and she is starving. Ruby is a hard-working, uneducated, down-on-her-luck young woman who has always had to provide for herself. Ada provides Ruby with a home, and Ruby teaches Ada how to work the farm. Inman is a wounded soldier trying to make his way back home at the end of the war, to Ada. He and Ada met briefly and fell in love before he left. ”
