Two middle-aged, out-of-shape guys decide to hike from Georgia to Maine on the Applachian Trail. I was a bit piqued when they skipped my entire neck of the woods, taking a taxi from Gatlinburg, TN to Roanoke, VA. Then they quit at Fort Royal, Virginia and skip the middle two-thirds, picking up...

I got a little bit bored reading this one. Maybe I don't relate very well to the interest in hiking the Appalachian Trail. I still like his writing style, but the topic wasn't for me.

Other than his overwhelming negativity, and seething arrogance, Bryson is a good narrator. Funny, informative, and interesting, which a good adventure to back up the storytelling. If only he wasn't such an almighty ass.

There isn't much I can add to the reviews already written. Enjoyable book with some history of the AT mixed with his personal experience, liked the humor and loved Katz!

Although it has its flaws, and it didn't go quite as I expected, Bryson does a great job blending history with anecdote and telling a compelling story about the AT. It does make me want to get out hiking some more, and gave me a greater appreciation for the AT itself, so I think it accomplished its purpose. It was extremely readable and I laughed out loud a couple of times. I recommend it.

It was only partly what I expected. He did hike some of the trail. It's more a history of the trail and a book about how horrible the government has been at taking care of it, conservation, etc. Uninteresting to me, especially when he contradicts himself by blaming the government for doing X and also blaming the government for NOT doing Y.

bill is obsessed with bears, but teaches a lot about hiking, the forest, and just how dangerous it can be out there, but then how close "out there" is to civilization.... except in maine

It starts off really funny like most Bryson books do, but it wears thin towards the end.

4 1/2 stars. Entertaining with lots of laugh out loud moments. Very realistic. It has lots of interesting facts and figures relating to the Appalachian Mountains and bush walking. I enjoyed it and would say that it's a light read, but not a hang on to your chair or a must read. It would make a good gift for any nature lovers or hikers.
