Bryson can make you laugh at anything, but he also can make you blood boil at the stupidity that the trail has suffered under, almost from its creation. Fun read, but be prepared to want to do something when you finish this book!
I read this book in one sitting because I could only put it down when I was laughing so hard I had to hold my belly. And behind the hilarity are serious comments on the environment and other issues but always from a fresh perspective and without the typically preachy tone.
I have walked much of the AT. Reading this recaptured some of the areas I visited and the way Bill tells the story of his journey is intriguing. It was interesting to read a different perspective of the trail.
I laughed so hard when I read this book about an average Bill who decides to walk the Appalachian Trail. Lessons about life, friendship & just what you can achieve if you set your mind to it!
Hey! Has anyone Hiked the AT Here? Just Wondering? I read one reviewer who talked about the pacific trail, my grandfather was the engineer for the trail! If you want to chat about it let me know!
Bryson is one of those rare authors who can make you laugh at something that makes you so mad you want to spit. He is a serious talent!
You are so right! I think that's the best way to describe his writing in this book.
I loved the tidbits of history mixed in with the adventures, and Katz, how can you forget about him??!!!
Just read that Robert Redford is making a movie out of this book....I can't wait to see it!
read it - good book.
I read this in one weekend, so funny! I cant wait to read his others...
I love this book. This is the kind of humor that sneaks up on you and leaves you laughing aloud in the middle of the night when you should be sleeping. For anyone who hasn't read this yet, don't miss it.
i have found all of his books do the same thing, they make you laugh out loud and make it very hard to quit reading, if you like Bryson, you might also try tom bodet and david sedaris
It's rare that a book makes me actually laugh out loud, but this one did quite a lot. Katz was hilarious. The funny thing is I am going on a three day AT hike this May with a group of friends, one of whom reminds me VERY much of Katz. It should be an interesting trip!
I totally agree, the parts of the book I enjoyed the most was when Kats was in the picture
