Rose Hathaway has always played by her own rules.
She broke the law when she ran away from St. Vladimir's Academy with her best friend and last surviving Dragomir princess, Lissa.
She broke the law when she fell in love with her gorgeous, off-limits instructor, Dimitri.

And she dared to defy Queen Tatiana, leader of the Moroi world, risking her life and reputation to protect generations of dhampir guardians to come.
Now the law has finally caught up with Rose--for a crime she didn't even commit. She's in prison for the highest offense imaginable: the assassination of a monarch.

She'll need help from both Dimitri and Adrian to find the one living person who can stall her execution and force the Moroi elite to acknowledge a shocking new candidate for the royal throne: Vasilisa Dragomir.
But the clock on Rose's life is running out. Rose knows in her heart the world of the dead wants her back...and this time she is truly out of second chances. the big question is, when your whole life is about saving others, who will save you?

Characters edit see section history

  • Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway: "Roza" - Strong. Loyal. Rose is a force to be reckoned with. She fiercely protects the one she loves, but her need to be in control -- the protector--affects her relationships with the people she cares about. Dhampir and a full fledged Guardian. Dating Adrian Ivashkov, but has conflicted feelings towards Dimitri Belikov, her former lover.
  • Dimitri Belikov: Handsome and Sexy. Heartbreaking. Lustful. Loyal and True. Confidant. A Russian Dhampir, once a Strigoi until Lissa, using spirit, transformed him back to a Dhampir. He is a Battle God, as Rose used to refer to him. Rose would also call him Comrade, which he didn't like.

Quotes edit see section history

  • “Sleeping Beauty awakens.”
    Dimitri Belikov
  • “So what are you doing here? I know it's not just a fatherly visit. You never do anything without a reason" . "Of course not. Why do anything without a reason? (to Abe Mazur)”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “Sometimes the greatest tests of our strength are situations that don't seem so obviously dangerous. Sometimes surviving is the hardest thing of all.”
    Abe Mazur
  • “The rest of the crowd and I couldn't help but stare at the dazzling display. So, you can imagine our surprise when the statues blew up. And when I say they blew up, I mean they blew up.”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “Thatʹs ridiculous," I replied, though really, it wasn't all that unreasonable of a theory. I sighed. "When the hell did things get so out of control? When did you guys start being the masterminds? Iʹm the one who comes up with the wacky, impossible plans. Iʹm supposed to be the general here. Now Iʹm barely a lieutenant.”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “I expected more explanation, but all I got was silence. Disbelief began to build up in me. Iʹd remained as patient as I could tonight, always assuming Dimitri was leading me toward some mysterious mission to help solve the murder. When he said we were going to wait, surely he didn't mean we were just going to . . . well, wait?”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “Youʹll be alive," he pointed out. "Thatʹs what matters. Enjoy what you have, every little detail of wherever you are. Donʹt focus on where you aren't.”
    Dimitri Belikov
  • “Yes, there he was at last. My tactful father had joined the conversation. Abe had been leaning against a wall near the doorway, dressed splendidly in a black suit with a shirt and tie that were exactly the same shade of emerald green. My mother stood beside him, the slightest hint of a smile on her face. For a moment, I was captivated as I studied them side by side. My mother: the perfect picture of guardian excellence and decorum. My father: always capable of achieving his goals, no matter how twisted the means. Uneasily, I began to understand how Iʹd inherited my bizarre personality.”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “Huh," Adrian said, letting himself in. "So thatʹs how youʹre going to fix the family problem. Little Dragomirs. Good idea." Christian sat up and strolled towards them. "Yeah, thatʹs exactly it. Youʹre interrupting official Council business.”
    Adrian Ivashkov; Christian Ozera
  • “But now . . . now we were both gone. Her family was gone. That hole inside threatened to consume her, and it was more than just the loss of the bond. Being alone is a terrible, terrible thing. Thereʹs no one to run to, no one to confide in, no one who cares what happens to you. Sheʹd been alone in the woods, but that was nothing like this. Nothing like it at all. Staring around, she wished she could go sink into my grave and end her torment.”
    Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir
  • “Hey, itʹs okay. You did the right thing. No one else would have tried something this impossible. Only Rose Hathaway. You risked your life by breaking Abeʹs rules—and it paid off. It was worth it.”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway; Dimitri Belikov
  • “Oh?" He arched an eyebrow. "You know how you're supposed to die?"."In battle." One tear managed to escape, and I hastily wiped it away. I'd always lived my life with a tough image. I didn't want that shattering, not now when it mattered most of all. "In fighting. Defending those I love. Not. .. not through some planned execution.”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway; Abe Mazur
  • “Youʹre still recovering. You might think youʹre back to normal, but you aren't." "This is normal for me. And you know, I thought with all this freedom and self-discovery and expression of our love stuff that we could finally stop with the whole Zen master wisdom and practical advice crap." That got me an outright grin. "Roza, thats not going to happen. Take it or leave it.”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway; Dimitri Belikov
  • “Without a moments hesitations, I shoved the abandoned cleaning cart in front of the room's door and sprinted off down the hall. A couple seconds later, the door opened, and I heard a cry of annoyance- as well as a very, very bad word in Russian- as he ran into the cart.”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “They come first.”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “I don't suppose," I said softly, "that we're going to talk about this morning?". "There's nothing to talk about."' . "I knew you'd say that. Actually, it was a toss-up between that and 'I don't know what you're talking about.'" Dimitri sighed.”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway; Dimitri Belikov
  • “It was no wonder my love life wo so messed up when the most profound and intimate moments were always being interrupted by dire situations.”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “I have it on good authority that Victor's going to have car trouble. Also that Robert likes Cheerios, so if you want some, you're out of luck. He doesn't seem like the sharing type.”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “I need you," said Lissa. "I hear that from women a lot," said Adrian.”
    Vasilisa Dragomir; Adrian Ivashkov
  • “Sometimes talking to you is like talking to myself: pretty damned annoying.”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “Do you think that's, like, real bacon?" I whispered to Sydney and Dimitri. "And not like squirrel or something?”
    Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “Fine," she said. "I guess it's okay.Go ahead""Huh? What's okay?" I demanded"It's okay if you marry my brother.”
    Angeline; Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway
  • “I always love to see what worries you. Strigoi? No. Questionable food? Yes. (to Rose)”
    Dimitri Belikov
  • “I don't need luck, Roza. I'll always find you. So, really it's up to you how difficult you want this situation to be. (to Rose)”
    Dimitri Belikov
  • “No." She admitted, but I'm not sursprised. I told you they're savage. A lot of ordinary problems are settled by fights like that. (to Rose)”
    Sydney Sage
  • “Eighteen, and already you've been accused of murder, aided felons, and acquired a death count higher than most guardians will ever see.' He paused. 'I couldn't be prouder.”
    Abe Mazur

Glossary edit see section history

  • Guardian: Dhampirs sworn to protect Morois from Strigois. Half Moroi and half humans often the product of when Dhampirs have affairs with Moroi men.
  • Moroi: A race of living, magic-using vampires who donʹt kill their victims for blood, unlike Strigoi.
  • Dhampir: Dhampirs are half-human, half-Moroi. While Moroi learn to use magic in school, dhampirs go to the same schools and learn how to protect Moroi and kill Strigoi. Dhampir's are 'supposed' to become Guardians, but not all of them choose that path (eg. female dhampirs who have children; they decide to become stay-at-home moms and talk care of their kids).
  • Strigoi: The evil, undead vampires who stalk us all. Inmortals without souls. Consummed by the need of drinking blood. They kill their food, unlike Moroi who only take sips. A Moroi can become Strigoi if they drink all the blood of their victim (humans), killing them, but humans and dhampirs have to be turned by a strigoi (it is not possible for them to turn otherwise as they do not drink blood on the first place).
  • Spirit User: Moroi who can wield spirit magic, some say they don't specialize in an element, but what others fail to realize is that Spirit is an element, though a forgotten one. Spirit provides magic that has yet to be fully studied, some people can heal, walk in dreams, etc...
  • Element User: Moroi who can wield elemental magic, they usually specialize in one kind of element (air, fire, water or earth). However, some might be able to wield two kinds of elements, it's a rare gift.
  • Alchemist: A secret society of humans who helped protect Moroi and dhampir interests, keeping them out of the mainstream human public; They think Moroi and Dhampir are evil and unnatural and mostly want to make sure they stay on the fringes of their society
  • The Keepers: those that still keep the old ways of vampires
  • The Tainted: In the Keepers eyes, the Moroi and Dhampir that have joined the modern world and left behind traditional ways and customs
  • The Lost: The Keepers name for Strigoi
