I did not like this book! I felt like it was a good story but I just felt the ending was to abrupt and I did not like the main character which really put me off.

Kate Chopin is an excellent writer, I ended up reading this for my college english critical thinking class and thought the woman was brilliant. Highly recommend.

A real hidden jem and one of my favorities. The symbolism is marvelous. The ending was quite a surprise but really that is the only way Chopin could have ended it. Shame that this still has not received the recognition it deserves.

Women must revisit Kate Chopin after certain milestones in their lives: marriage or partnership, children and the like. I had a decidedly different take on her work than I did when I first read her stories some 20 years ago.

The Awakening is a very interesting book. However, one must first understand the culture about which it is written. In this culture women's duty is to be a good wife. Divorce is never even a thought. This is what makes The Awakenign so interesting. The book is about the protagonist and her affairs. I gave this book only two stars because I really don't find that kind of plot interesting. Also the writing, though it fits the book, isn't the kind of writing I like. It is, for lack of better word, "girly" or "effiminate", which makes sense b/c it's written by a girl. Let me clarify a previous statement, though the plot of the book centers around affairs, the point of the book is about a woman's right to be an individual. So if you like love affairs and feministic writing, go ahead and read it. If not, Reader Beware!

I have a love-hate relationship with the main character of 'The Awakening'. Admiration for her sense of self-preservation, disgust at her selfishness. Chopin's short stories are excellent (with the exception of the use of excessive patois).

A nice, short summer read. I found it fascinating that this book was banned! I also kept thinking about Anna Karenina--a woman forced to choose between her lover and her children. The protagonist in the Awakening is so different from Anna Karenina though.

It was interesting to have other short stories by Chopin included in this volume because it made it very clear what a departure The Awakening was. I found it compelling but disquieting. Even though I could see the ending coming, I was still not happy about it. I'm still undecieded, is is a cop out or not? Is this all Edna has available, the only 'free' choice? I don't think so.
