Nabakov's prose is almost musical. His wielding of alliteration is highly effective. This book taught me to look past content.

I know a lot of people find this book disturbing, or even disgusting, but it's so much more than that. Yes, it is about pedophilia, which is disturbing and disgusting. But it's so beautifully written that it's not hard to look past that. Just look:

"Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta."

"Ladies and gentlement of the jury, exhibit number one is what the seraphs, the misinformed, simple, noble-winged seraphs, envied. Look at this tangle of thorns."

It becomes hard not to sympathize with the narrator, as perverse as he is.

A must read, once you're past a certain age.

Wonderful and appalling, Humbert Humbert, maybe the most famous pervert in literature presents his take on his obsession with the young Lolita and their travels through his adopted country, the USA

Powerfully real human nature story on the particularly taboo topic of sexuality. I can't help but praise the candid flowing truth of this classic.

Loved the first half in particular. Thought it was nearly perfect. The second half was still good, but didn't ring as true to me.

The most beautiful descriptions of the most horrid things. Lolita is a wonder.

So, the story is obviously sickening - unless you're a pedophile sympathizer, then perhaps it's a delightful read.

So, once you get past the plot, which let's face it, it's not like is a shocker - this is a notorious piece of fiction after all ... the writing has it's good moments. BUT, I feel like the author's meandering thoughts and pastoral-esque droning made it feel like a longer read than it probably should have been.
