The end was inevitable and the only way it could go. As much as we would have loved for it to be resolved in some other humane manner, the outside world had not gone through the remarkable transformation that the captors and captives had. It was a wonderfully romanticized story of a terrorist takeover, but I had a hard time believing all 50 captives got along so well....for 4+ months? One big happy family? A little hard to believe. Not one hot head attempting to over throw the terrorists? No plots to get out? That being said, I still loved the fantasy of it.

I hated it. At first I enjoyed it, through the middle I tolerated it, and in the end I got mad. Everyone you developed true feelings for dies.

Abolutely Patchett's best book: the others were a disappointment. Her writing & character development were as lush as the countryside. As an opera fanatic I was of course drawn to buy this book, and read it non-stop like a chocoholic with a 5-lb box of godivas on her lap. As with some of you I was so sorry when it ended. It was truly one of the great novels of the year.
