During WWII, three women's lives intersperse with one another as one broadcasts the events of the war, another does not deliver a letter and the third waits in vain for her husband to return to her. Frankie Baird is one of only a few women war corespondents, who broadcasts along side of Edward R Murrow. She is supposed to keep her reports unemotional, but has difficulty trying to do so. Iris James runs a clean and ship shape post office in the little town of Franklin, Mass. Emma has married a doctor who she loves very much. But the doctor's feelings of guilt take him overseas to a London Hospital and a long separation from his wife.
