“Virginia DeBerry and Donna Grant did an emmaculate job of creating a story of three African American friends experiencing life pains together since their childhood. These complex characters, Gayle Saunders, Patricia Reid and Marcus Carter tell their story in flashbacks that reveal what happened that afternoon Marcus's older brother, Freddy Carter, was shot and how that affected them for the rest of their lives. Gayle dealing with her gambling husband and hectic lifestyle lets Patricia down the one time she ever needed anything from anyone, which causes Patricia and Gayle to not speak for over ten years. Patricia flahses back to the past of her life as a child with no one, not even a mother to lean on. The only person she ever had was her bestfriend Gayle. Over time Pat searches to find herself, love and her father, while using her great career accomplishments as a void for pain. Marcus Carter regrets that afternoon he ever stopped by Pats house after school. He lives his brothers dream of playing baseball to pay him back for that day. In the midst of his career he is determined for self destruction and almost kills himself until he faces the truth about Freddy's death. I enjoyed this book, I could not put it down.”

Pat's mother works at a bar and does not seem to care much about her life was fine for Pat until her grandmother died and she was forced to live with her mean and evil mother. Her mother is so busy worrying about meeting the next man walking that she cares little for Pat something happens and Pat is able to go and live with her best friend Vanessa and her family. Vanessa has everything at least so it seems beauty, the best hair, the best clothes and parents that truly adore her. When they let Pat come an stay with them the learn to love Pat just as Vanessa loves Pat although they don't treat Pat the same at first. Pat stays focused and gets a scholarship and goes to college and does her best. Vanessa is too busy running after Marcus who is pursuing a professional baseball career to think about what she is going to do after high school. Her dream to be Mrs. Marcus that dream turns into a twist of other events that lead Vanessa to another man she meets after she sees' Marcus is not ready for the commitment that she wants Ramsey - he is FINE, owns a landscaping business, a sharp dresser, likes to wine and dine in fine establishments and appears to have unlimited money all the things that are important to Vanessa and after a short period of time she gets pregnant and at first, Ramsey does not want anything to do with her again but he ask her to marry him and she does she does not know that Ramsey is a serious gambler and thought of her only as a good luck charm and ask her to marry him only because he was betting at the time and said if I win, “I Will Marry Vanessa” her parents are shocked they don’t know anything about this guy except he’s a lot older than Vanessa and very flamboyant......Vanessa’s dad has a heart attack and dies. Pat on the other hand finishes school and lands the best Marketing job there is she has it going on all the things she never had before however now her and Vanessa are not friends because of some of the decisions that Vanessa made one of them staying away from Pat at Ramsey's request.

“These two are masterful story tellers. I love there books. I have written to the authors to thank them for a great read.
Very good writing and storyline about the relationship and challenges of two best friends.”
“I read this book so long ago, yet it is still amongst my favorite. This book was well written and captivates what friendships are truly made of. We all grow and sometimes we part from those we thought we couldn't live without. Gayle, and Pat who are totally different become like sisters when Pat is left on her own. They are forever binded with a terrible memory. As they loose one another and fully run into their lives it seems that they reunite unexpectingly and with a twist of things that have changed all of their lives. This was a great collaboration and I highly recommend this book.”
