“Deep Shadow by Randy Wayne White
The novel begins with Doc, Tomlinson, and Will Joseph Chaser scuba diving in a Florida lake looking for the Batista treasure that Arlis Futch had accidentally found while alligator hunting. Old Futch was completely firm in his belief of the treasure. Futch took his savings and bought the farm where he found the Cuban gold coin and animals had disappeared. The farmer and his hired ranchers believed it was a large gator and hired Futch to catch it.
Will is an inexperienced diver and makes a deadly mistake causing a limestone cave in. Doc tries to save the two trapped divers. He surfaces to get Futch to help only to find his friend Futch the prisoner of two deranged killers.
From here the story gets to be a real page turner until at last the end arrives. I loved the ending with the hand of justice filled by nature itself.
I haven't enjoyed the past few books by Randy but this one is definitely a great story and why I first started reading his novels.
I like his use of Florida, its environment, the scuba diving, the caves, the animals, and reptile knowledge. In a few books that are my favorites he brings in a warning about the invasive species that are quite deadly, but very comfortable in Florida. Imagine a Komodo dragon appearing in your back yard chewing on your dog, cat, or young child? Impossible? Is it? Be warned.
“Not one of White's best; the plot was very contrived”Susan A wrote this review Wednesday, May 26, 2010. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No

“I never thought that I would be hooked on a basic storylilne like this one where it focused on one event like a basic beginner dive. But I was and there was so many layers to it and I could not put it down. ”Jill wrote this review Wednesday, April 21, 2010. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
