  • Tuckerby (Tuck) underbank: The main character who is also a Warrow. His hometown is called Woody Hollow, and he graduates with his class and soon leaves home for a long period of time, initially to become a thorn-walker; that transitions into something greater later on though. Some but not all warrows of importance include Danner Bramblethorn,and Patrel.
  • Merilee Holt: Tuck's lover, and also a Warrow. The day he leaves she gives him a pendent to remember her on his travels. Then she stays behind in Woody hollow, but still plays an important role in the trilogy.
  • King Aurion (Aurion red-eye): The king over the surrounding lands; he is also a human. He has called upon people of the surrounding areas in a call to arms to stem the approaching dark tide.
  • Gildor (Elf): A representative of the elves, and a good friend to the King. He encounters Tuck at Challerain Keep.
  • Prince Galen: Son of Aurion, brother of prince Igon, Galen is next in line for the throne to Mithgar. He encounters tuck at Othran the seer's tomb.
