It's almost as real as the city itself and perhaps sturdier and more malleable than concrete. When I read this book I dreamt that I was circling the...” see full review » see other reviews » |

I felt like the ending was a little lackluster, but perhaps that's simply because I didn't want the book to end. Regardless, this is a book that everyone should read.”

He has an amazing command of the English language, an infinite imagination, an unsurpassed ability to convey the essence of winter, an ability to weave together the most seemingly disparate elements, and an ability not only to suspend disbelief as he weaves his impossible tale, but to captivate you so that even though you don't understand what's going on, you don't care--you just want to be caught up in his vision. The story revolves around New York becoming "the perfectly just city," to which I cannot lend a particle of credence, but I love the book all the same. I'm currently on my third or fourth reading.”

This book creates at least the beginnings of a mythology of the United States centered in the NYC experience. Chronological flow of time is not a constant, nor did its absence create disturbance for me as I read Peter Lake's tale.”

I read it again every few years -- usually during the long winter months -- to escape in Helprin's utterly gorgeous prose and this thrilling, fantastical story. It is difficult to describe, though it comes close to an American "magical realism". ”

But this book is insane, amazing magic. Read the first page, and I challenge you to not read the rest of the book.”
