Nasneen is a very subtle yet effective heroine, and by the end i even felt some sympathy for the pompous Chanu. the characters are so wonderfully human that you cannot help but feel some affection for them all, from...” see full review » see other reviews » |

“This book chronicles a family (beginning with the young couple before they have children) and their move from India to England, and then how they struggle as their children grow up British rather than Indian, and how they come to terms with their lower-middle class status. I liked it. ”

Personally, I hated it. I couldn't even read past the first 100 pages and for me, that's saying something. The sisters letters to Nazneen made no sense - they were full of choppy language and made my head hurt to read - but it's clear that Nazneen didn't know English so was her sister so uneducated that she didn't know how to form a sentence in her native language?
Nazneen herself was aloof and pitiful to me. I could not relate to her, nor feel genuine pity for her situation. Her husband was typical of what you'd expect in an arranged marriage - and once I got over the grossness of the descriptions of what Nazneen had to do for him (seriously.. do we have to talk about the shaving of corns more than once?) he was easily put out of my mind as something wholly uninteresting and disgusting.
Not worth the hype, in my opinion. ”
“Excellent read! Sad too but shows 2 women's survival”
