It is one of those books that has left an indelible mark for me... I still think of it often.” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“Written on the Body does not have a strong story. In fact, nothing much happens, except the narrator falls in love with a beautiful married redhead and proceeds to make poor decisions. =P |
“Perfect sex scenes - dizzying. I became obsessed with Winterson, (not the person - the idea of her) after reading this.”

The book rambled even more than the typical Winterson and included long reflections by the narrator. Actually, it reminded me a bit of reading a love-sick friend’s livejournal ramblings from 2000. The big difference is my friends could never write like Winterson, and her prose is so addictive that I forgive her every sin against plot and pacing almost before she has committed them.
I read this in one sitting, but I would almost recommend that it was read over a long period of time. The pay-off in the book in the lovely passages and phrases that Winterson drops into the narrative, and they might be better appreciated a little at a time.”
“It is a good reference about the absurdness of cliches, romantic love and the ideal "sexy" references to a women's body. For the first time in my life, I got to realy think about the way in which one may find her/himself as a victim to the commercialised ideals of what love and sex should be like. Most importantly, the novel defies the notion of love being a globally fixed thing that everyone else should aspire to. No, love should be determined by the interpersonal relationship of the two people involved and how they experience it should not be influenced by what is romantic and what is not, with reference to the "love" or "sex gurus". This novel helped me understand that it is fine if I find a simple act of eating soup is sexy rather than reacting from a bad rash, from painting my body with a "sexy fruit" that was suppose to tantalise the partners taste buds and make me feel sexy.”

It made me fall in love with reading for pleasure again after so many years of "having to read" books for school. I loved it so much that I have since read every singlebook she has written.”
