This is one of my favorite books. I just love Jeffrey Eugenides and as far as I'm concerned, this is his best work. I could (and do) read it over and over again. Although I'm guilty of seeing the movie before reading the book, I still think that I give appropariate love to the novel itself. His writing is just so poetic and dreamy. I was honestly shocked that this book was written by a man because it's so in touch with the feminine psyche and adolescence in general. Don't even get me started about this book- I could go on forever. The narration style, the characters, the unique writing, how it all feels like it's read through the film of mystery and age.... just perfect.

We love this story. We picked the book up and fell in love with the sisters, their deaths and the tone in which they told it. We love how perfectly serene such madness can be told in.

I really want to read this, I've heard that it's very unique. Maybe in 2010?

I loved this story, but admittedly I didn't understand it. It was so dark....

I have a mixed opinion on this book. On the one hand, I can see the poignancy of the emotion and time line surrounding the girls' suicides and found it both haunting and relative to adolescent life. At the same time I wasn't as grasped by the plot as I thought I could have been. Reading it you get the sense of being the onlooker, unaware to what exactly was happening in the household and left to guess and ask "why".

I found it boring. Though it was quite interesting how the story was plotted. But there were some lacking materials and information. Saw the movie and it was also boring.

If there was ever a first chapter that grabbed me, it'd be this one. It only gets better too. It's tragic, yes but the title already tells you the subject matter. The whole time you're wondering why, why are they doing this? True to life though, we don't always know.
