The narrator and pov are uniquely compelling and the mystery of what you don't know about the characters is more motivating to continue than what you do know. Eugenides is a true master at characterization.”

The movie is different but equally as brilliant in its own way.”

After reading it a few years back, I placed it on my bookshelf at school in hopes that one of my students would pick it up and read something good for once. The title certainly elicited a few snickers (I was teaching eighth graders at the time), but I dared a particularly silly thirteen-year-old boy to actually read it instead of mock it, and he agreed to give it a try. He wound up really, really liking it. What better endorsement could there be? ”
