The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay

by Michael Chabon

Like the comic books that animate and inspire it, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay is both larger than life and of it too. Complete with golems and magic and miraculous escapes and evil nemeses and even hand-to-hand Antarctic battle, it pursues the most important questions of love and war, dreams and art, across pages brimming with longing and hope. I loved this book from beginning to end. I have so many things to say, but nothing quite grasps just how good this was. Kavalier & Clay will stay with me for a long time. Absolutely beautiful. Funny in a way that you must sometimes laugh in the hands that life deals you. True in spirit. Amazing.

2 stars for readability, though I didn't care for the story itself. I attribute that mostly to subject fatigue on my part; I feel like every Holocaust novel/movie ever made is recycling the same plotlines, and I don't feel like I need to keep reading/watching them. This one in particular was overlong.

I just finished this book and although I loved it, I feel like I need a better explanation of why Sammy had to leave. Anyone?

A favorite read from last year takes place in my favorite city, NYC. I loved it, and it is often on my mind. World War II history, great story, comic books, magicians, twisting plot and written very well.

I really enjoyed this book...the character development was great. There were parts that were just a tad bit too slow, though...and the ending left me feeling a bit unfinished. It was such a great story, though, with a lot of history in it....in all honestly, I'm still a bit unsure as to whether the Escapist was really a comic book (I've never been a big comic book reading....okay, Archies when I was a kid...not quite the same caliber, though!). Chabon made enough references to lead me to believe that it's based on a real comic book...but I'm not sure.....any answers?
