Me Talk Pretty One Day

by David Sedaris

David Sedaris became a star autobiographer on public radio, onstage in New York, and on bestseller lists, mostly on the strength of "SantaLand Diaries," a scathing, hilarious account of his stint as a Christmas elf at Macy's. (It's in two separate collections, both worth owning, Barrel Fever and the Christmas-themed Holidays on Ice.) Sedaris's caustic gift has not deserted him in his fourth... (read more)

    A definite must read! :)

    Funny. Short. Sweet. Entertaining. Unique.

First off, I did not know that David Sedaris was gay (which is not a bad thing, believe me!). This book is a compilation of events that have happened to David since childhood to adulthood and involves those mostly related to speaking, listening, conversing in a foreign language, stories, etc.

Five words for Sedaris's work, five exemplary words. "Me Talk Pretty One Day" is a light read on humorous thoughts. I recommend it to anyone who as time to kill and a sense of humor to boot. His being gay is not really an issue here, he refers to it as his relationship, a common part of day-to-day conversations, which is a good thing also. David says things we would not normally say. Stories where he was offended were told without prejudice or any grudge behind it. After reading this book, I thought well and hard and concluded that indeed, most people do not think before they speak and they do not entertain the thought that someone might actually be listening.

    Read it, enjoy it! :)

LOVE Sedaris. I don't think any author has ever made me laugh more outloud.

Often poignant, always hilarious, I enjoyed this book immensely. Of the two Sedaris books I've read, I like this one the best. Both have left me wanting more.

Such a funny book. I had read Holidays on Ice & didn't care a lot for it so this was a wonderful surprise. I especially liked, Youth in Asia & all of his references to his broken-French language. Absolutely hilarious!
