The book tells the story of a young, naive girl in rural Utah whose polygamist family seals her fate. Although Irene's mother left the polygamist lifestyle, the extended family remained leaders within it. So, when she walked away from her mother's impoverished home, Irene chose to marry a man she hoped would provide for her. That was not to be. Over the next twenty years, Irene bore 13 children and adopted a Mexican orphan, while living in the most primitive conditions imaginable near Ciudad Juarez, Mexico -- the "Mormon Colonies." Having sister wives was another ordeal Irene endured; she entered the marriage as a second wife (meaning she had no say in anything). By the time of her husband's eventual death, Irene was physically spent, emotionally and spiritually comatose, and psychologically scarred for life. Her memoir, and a new religion, helped her recovery. But writing this book gave her a sense of purpose and esteem she had never known as a young girl and polygamist wife.
P.S. My neighbor and good friend happens to be Irene Spencer's niece. She adores this woman, and loaned me her copy of the book. After reading what Irene endured, I adore her too.
