Cast of Characters/Important People

  • Mr. Brodsky: Retired orchestra conductor being cultivated for a comeback.
  • Boris: Young male child, ten years old. Grandson to Gustav, son of Sophie.
  • Gustav: Hotel Porter, held in grand esteem by assoociation of porters for effort extended to raise portering standards. Father of Sophie.
  • Sophie: Daughter of Gustav, mother of Boris.
  • Mr. Ryder: The protagonist. Apparently well known concert pianist. The Unconsoled wanders between first and third person. When in the first person, the perpective is that of Mr. Ryder. He has come to town for a recital.
  • Mr. Hoffman: The hotel proprietor. Has taken personal resposibility for the rehabilitation of Mr. Brodsky.
  • Stephan Hoffman: Mr. Hoffman's son and amateur pianist.
  • The Countess: Arts patron and society dowager.
  • Mr. Christoff: Cellist, once held in high artistic regard, now fallen out of favor.
  • Rosa Klenner: Christof's wife. Beautiful and allegedly attracted to successful artists.
  • Miss Collins: Mr. Brodsky's wife, they have been estranged for twenty years.
  • Mrs. Hoffman: Mr. Hoffman's wife, from a family with deep artistic and cultural connections.
  • Jonathan Parkhurst: A friend of Mr. Ryder's from his days as a student in England.
  • Geoffrey Saunders: Another school friend, ran cross country with Mr. Ryder.
  • Ms. Stratmann: Hotel employee, and Mr. Ryder's liason/contact point for the concert. Maintain's Ryder's schedule making adjustment's and excuses as needed.
