The writing style is beautifully gritty. The story is harsh. The character of Shai is compelling. The style is far from anything I'd have ever chosen to read on my own and the beginning and many sections within were hard to power through. Killings, language I wouldn't expect from anyone and a view into the drug-cartel underworld that made me cringe. If you like a hard, violent, true-feeling book that is basically a New York Trinadad blacks version of The Godfather, this is your book.

This book is really a good book. This book challenges "be more chill" for the best book yet. K'wan i think is know my favorite author because of this book. The story is about a college kid name Shai Clark. He is the second oldest of three children under Tommy Clark senior, or as he is know in the street "Poppa". Poppa is the head of one of New York's most notorious crime families. Instead of the street dream shai's older brother tommy and father had. Shai had a dream of becoming a pro basketball player. He was a really good player and was giving the chance to play for a really good college team, thanks to his dad. But all that ended when he was caught betting on his games and was sent home. When Shai got home he didnt expect what would be coming for him. He would fall in love with a girl who was supposedly a hoe, and slept with tommy. And most of all, have to take over and resolve problems with other families after his father is murdered and his brother nearly having the same fate. Great twists and turns. Truly a must read. :)

Hoodlum is a pretty interesting book once you read it, but it was hard memorizing all of characters.

While this kind of book is normally not my cup of tea, I loved it. There was a great character base and the story kept moving the entire time. Highly recommend.

Another shocker, this book shows how your connections are vital. I met the author and was ashamed that i thought he was one of your "urban" writer and I apologize. (I'm a woman that adits when she's wrong) This book was an amazing read.
