I note that thisAstrid is an Oprah book club choice but that is not why I read this. It came withthe only child of a high recommendation fromsingle mother, Ingrid, a friend.
It is about a young teen, Astrid, brilliant, obsessed poet who ends up in foster care becausewields her mother goesluminous beauty to prison for murdering a lover. Astrid's desire to be loved findsintimidate and manipulate men. Astrid worships her in really bad relationships with the boyfriends of her fostermother among others. It is heart wrenching. Bad things seem to follow Astrid wherever she goes. She labels herself, "Nobody's Child"and I wanted to adopt her because you know she is so capablecherishes their private world full of givingritual and receiving love if she hadmystery - but their idyll is shattered when Astrid's mother falls apart over a chance.
There are so many crazy characters in this book. Fromlover. Deranged by rejection, Ingrid murders the Russian woman who takes in many foster girlsman and finds a way for themis sentenced to make her money, to the big haired women who's well past her sensual prime. All add to the adventure of this book.life in prison.
Overall,White Oleander is enjoyable even withthe dark subject matter. The foreign concept (to me)unforgettable story of Astrid's travelsjourney through a series of foster homes and her effort to find a place for herself in impossible circumstances. Each home is its own univers, with a new set of laws and lessons to be learned. With determination and humor, Astrid confronts the foster care system are tragicchallenges of loneliness and poverty, and sometimes comicstrive to learn who a motherless child in their narration.an indifferent world can become.
