oh man, haven't we all known a selfish manipulative freak like that mom? Poor poor Astrid, kudos to her for being strong. I appreciated the author's ability to use words that didn't describe so much as evoke. Wonderful.

White Oleander just means so much to me. It symbolizes oppression and the demands society places on the unknowing. Astrid. Astrid. Janet Fitch created a rich and pure text that is alive and the movie while it was well acted and pretty it has nothing on the book. :)

Compelling! I could not put this book down. The characters were developed brilliantly. I had true affection for everyone in the book. Janet Finch was able to really put me in the life of this little girl. Not to mention the lyrical prose.True poetry. A little dark, yes. Disturbing, yes. That was why I liked it. That's life and I love an author who breaks through the boundaries of what is right and wrong. with no worry of offending the reader. That's true story telling and the only way to translate life into art. NO HOLDS BARRED.

Disturbing at times but still so easy to read. Found time to read this book in a few days when I really should have been working...or sleeping. Awesome read.

This is one of those books that you can't put down once you have started reading. It left me with a heavy heart, feeling the sadness, frustration, anger, and rejection of Astrid as she dealt with different struggles in her life including her mother's expectations of her. It's definitely not an inspiring story but it sure was brilliantly written.
