“Absolutely love this book. Once I got through the first chapter, it really became absorbing. The mother character was a blast--so perfectly drawn, this woman who wants her kids to be perfect when they're so not! Chip grew on me after awhile. Absolutely loved Denise. I could have a read a whole book devoted to Denise or Gary's family life. Just a really excellent depiction of the modern 'effed up family.
I've read a lot of comments about people hating the characters and not wanting to read a book filled with people they don't like. I just don't get that--did everyone grow up with perfect families? Franzen's character's were just so real to me--they make horrible mistakes, do stupid things, and just keep trudging along. Just like lots of people I know in real life--myself included!”
