ITA with Kristin. I loved the bare bones of the stories, but I was unsatisfied with the writing as a whole because the title story didn't seem to flesh out the characters, plot, or motivation well enough.
I thought Man Who Forgot His Name was better. I had no complaints. The other revenge story about the drug lord was too over-the-top....I think that was the problem with the title story as well--Tristan was too busy being larger than life and outdoing every character Hemmingway ever wrote to be a truly sympathetic or believable hero for me.

Still....there is a beauty in the title story, and it is one of the few short stories I've read that really stays with me. I see why Zwick wanted to see it on film--and to his credit, I think it's better. But if he (Zwick) hadn't cut some of the scenes it would not be so piecey. (Kristin, if you're still out there, the complete version was longer and made more sense) This was one of the author's first efforts, and I feel like if he had worked on the draft longer, or held onto it for a while to hone his craft, it would not have some of the chronological errors, anachronisms, and just would have been a better work.
