A great exploration of what it means to be human. The science is well written and believable but ultimately is just a backdrop for a great novel.

WOW! I do not often read sci fiction but this was FINE! One of the best, I think.

Powers turns himself into a character in this novel, which gives him the opportunity to explain how and why a writer writes, and to grapple with being stuck. What could be an overweening self-indulgence is fairly insightful in Powers' hands. The book’s other concern is consciousness and the creation of consciousness in a computer, and this dovetails nicely with Powers’ ideas about writing. The only real trouble here is that the book has nowhere to go--either it will affirm the writer’s efforts, or reduce it to a hopeless polemic. The plot provides a few necessary difficulties for Powers, and if Powers does not overcome them all, he does put pen back to paper (or fingers back to keyboard) by the novel’s end. Some of the obstacles seem extraneous; the reader gets the point. Powers does a fine job exploring the jumbled consciousness of the writer. While some may be less interested in the splendid pathways from idea to page, simply delighting in the finished product, those stuck along the way will find ways out of the thicket here.

Sometimes a difficult read, but some really beautiful passages and ideas.
