Behind the Scenes at the Museum

"I exist!" exclaims Ruby Lennox upon her conception in 1951, setting the tone for this humorous and poignant first novel in which Ruby at once celebrates and mercilessly skewers her middle-class English family. A darkly humorous book about growing up in a dysfunctional family. Part detective novel, part satire, Ruby tries to piece together her family that has fallen apart and reconcile the past with the present.

I enjoyed the witty and flippant writing style that belies the somewhat dark subject matter.

aww. I liked it, the humour of it. It had me laughing out loud quite a few times. The point of the book was family history and what goes 'behind the scenes' as it were. Ruby has a dysfunctional family which had a few secrets, so in a sense it is about her finding her identity in this family. Quite a few novels out now seem to be of this 'family secret' genre. Reading it through again I found if I thought about it too much it depressed me, as hidden beneath the surface of all the wit and humour is a lot of buried emotional pain. That's what struck me about this book.

I thought this book was terrible. Probably the worst book I have ever finished reading. Boring, slow, and pointless.

there is a segment in this book where it outlines what it feels like to have sisters...as a girl with two sisters, there is nothing closer to your heart.
