“Alexandrine Marit is a witch in mortal danger. An evil mage craves the powerful, mysterious talisman that supplies her magic, and the only person who can keep her safe is a dark and dangerous fiend called Xia. With his fierce animosity toward witches, he's hardly the ideal bodyguard. Yet as days turn into nights, she can't deny the white-hot passion between them. Xia hates witches. They enslave and mercilessly kill his kind. But he's been ordered to protect Alexandrine, who, to his surprise, has a spirit he admires and a body he longs to possess. With the mage and his henchmen closing in, Alexandrine and her protector must trust the passion that can unite them...or risk losing everything to the enemies who can destroy them both”
Nisareen - So Much To Read So Little Time wrote this review Saturday, March 5, 2011. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No“Honestly, this book was very confusing. The overall theme was easy to understand: girl is put in danger, her psychotic father does care if she dies as long as he obtains what he wants, her overprotective foster brother forces a fiend to guard her, they are sexually attracted to each other, eventually emotionally involved, and together they survive through a major tragedy, defeat her father, and live happily ever after. That pretty much seems to be the outline for every novel I read nowadays. It has indeed become old. Despite that, I still enjoyed this novel.
However, I often found myself confused. It wasn’t because I didn’t know what was going on, who somebody was, and didn’t read the first in the series. No, the characters’ gestures and dialogues confused me. Sometimes, one character would touch another in a certain way, and I didn’t understand why. Other times, characters would be conversing and I just didn’t understand why they were saying the things they were. I don’t know if I was tired or what, but I found myself wondering more often than not why they were doing the things they were. After awhile, I just stopped questioning and read.
Xia and Alexandrine’s relationship also had me scratching my head. At first, all they did was bicker. And not even intelligent arguing either. There was no trying to prove a point or open the other’s eyes. Nope, this was just flat out arguing for the sake of arguing. I was to the point of pulling my hair when all of a sudden, they cared about each other. They weren’t so emotionally attached yet, just one person caring about the safety of another. I think the turnabout gave me whiplash. Then events actually started happening. By the time I finished the book, I literally had no idea. I think I was just too exhausted to read this novel and actually comprehend it.”

You always feel like nothing is "safe" and anything can happen. The main character in this book - Xia - is an interesting character from the 1st book and in this book he's kind of an anti-hero. Which is cool for me because I like anti-heroes. The couple in this book have an electric connection and at the end of the book I can't help but wish that they would get their own series.”

The fact that the creature hating her is the image of everything desirable in a man might have something to do with that. But soon the fact that her apartment’s under attack from screaming demons and she’s on the run, still with the enormously desirable, enormously forbidden guardian, gives her no time to consider how to react.
Carolyn Jewel’s novel leaves no doubt how her characters feel about each other. And the misunderstandings about who and what might be bad, who’s enslaving whom, and definitions of entrapment, etc. can’t hide them from their love.
My Forbidden Desire always knows where it’s going. It creates an intricate and fascinating world, peoples it with flawed and wonderful characters, and tells a fascinating tale of passion and intrigue. A fun, exciting read.

“If I had to describe this book in as few words as possible I would say it is a scandalous Harlequin novel meets Charmed. It is paranormal romance with a heavy dose of down 'n dirty. But it is fun and I did get drawn in.

“I can't say I really enjoyed this book, but I can't say I disliked it either. Reading a story about modern witches and demons is a first for me. Characters in this book use a lot of magic, but I think most of it is not visible; it's all in the mind with one's magic being able to elicit physiological symptoms and bodily reactions, whether these are desirable ones or painful ones. Magic is used to push, to pull, to guard, to take over... there are all sorts of neat tricks.
Despite Alexandrine and Xia's initial feelings for each other, their attraction for one another starts off as a physical one, even a magical one. They're shallow and call each other names, but their circumstances make it a bad idea for them to be separated. They then depend on each other for their own survival and go out of their way for the other. Their relationship moves forward, but I find there's something lacking in their romance, and I'm not even talking about the love-hate scenario that we come across rather often as readers and movie-goers, and even in our own lives.
I personally didn't like some of the language being used. There are some terms and expressions I might need to look up on Urban Dictionary and some swearing which I find is sometimes overdone. It may be appropriate for action scenes or the "all-guy" scenes, but it takes away from the romance. Expressions like "move it, buster" or "righty-o" just seem misplaced and even unnecessary, especially when characters are in a crisis. The wording of some passages even made me raise an eyebrow. The pacing of the story is very good, but I find the characters lack a certain depth to them. I'm saying this because while I was reading, I didn't care for Alexandrine and Xia as much as I could have (ouch) but learning more about how their magical world kept me reading, but that's just me.
My Forbidden Desire is actually the second book, following My Wicked Enemy. I didn't read the first one, but I didn't feel lost while reading this one. The cover of this book has been seen in the blogosphere quite a lot. If you like paranormal romances, give this one a try.”
