Norwegian Wood (Vintage International Original)

by Haruki Murakami

In 1987, when Norwegian Wood was first published in Japan, it promptly sold more than 4 million copies and transformed Haruki Murakami into a pop-culture icon. The horrified author fled his native land for Europe and the United States, returning only in 1995, by which time the celebrity spotlight had found some fresher targets. And now he's finally authorized a translation for the... (read more)

Man oh man, did this book depress the hell out of me. Haruki Murakami's 'Norwegian Wood' is a reminiscing kind of book, taking us back to the world of free love in the 60s. Protagonist Toru Watanabe's nonchalant narration of his teenage years and first love is kind of at odds with the 'heaviness' of the book's theme, but his seeming detachment makes it all the more sad. Can't give away much more without spoiling the story. Read this over cigarettes or a very strong drink.

without the usual magical realist style, this straight forward narrative of love, longing and the late 60's did not hold me as his books usually do and it possibly due to its dark world of death (half the characters go dying like nine pins) and schizophrenia... but it can be moving in parts and started out well but i think it is not as memorable as kafka on the shore.... the flaw is mostly in the lack of development in the characters.... they are all so static over the two year period... except Midori who is alive and real. All the same if you are romantic enough the book would work for you.

my copy of this book was a gift from a friend. thank God she gave me this! I really love this book, though it was quite depressing in my case since i almost feel like one of the characters in the book...It was like a novel written about me - on those perplexing moments of my life...
Better grab one copy of this novel!

I really liked this book when I read it but I know many people that I've recommended it to didn't care for it. I read it in my early 20's and I was searching for meaning in my life. Very possible that I realated to the book on that level...similar to reading Catcher in the Rye when you're 15. I'd like to reread the book to see if I have the same experience. My favorite character in the book was the fragile Naoko who frusterated me even as she drew me into her "mad" world.

A tearjerker hippie love story! It will make you fall in love again like a 16 year-old school-boy.
