A grouchy day often starts in the morning, so the story begins there. The unnamed little boy in the story is not ready to get up. When he is surrounded by a host of frowning, gray clouds he lets them push him out of bed and chooses to follow their grumpy advice. It's all downhill from there. He doesn't want oatmeal for breakfast. His sister annoys him by playing with his bear so he bullys her and makes her cry. At the park he upsets his friends by kicking sand at them. Dad intervenes and says it's time to go home. A rotten day gets worse when he can't make his puzzle pieces fit. The final meltdown takes place in the kitchen when Dad asks little grouchie to help with the dishes. At last, the little boy gives up and at bedtime is reassured by Mom and Dad that things will get better. Mom even indicates that she had a battle with the grouchies when she was five like him. Finally, good thoughts overcome bad thoughts and the next day brings a completely different reaction to the grouchies banter.
