Liked It“In the Fermata Baker stops time to create a space where our diverging thoughts can breathe. Many feel this is his best book, and whilst I really enjoyed this one it is not my favourite. Still prefer The Mezzanine.” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“This book was so pointless to me, I didn't even finish it! I actually remember throwing this book across my bedroom because I was sick of it.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Didn't finish it. The plot was really interesting, but both its story progression and main character were incredibly dull. It seemed like the author's goal was to make sheltered pretentious intellectuals blush at the word "dildo."”

There's no unifying story; rather it seems more like a collection of stopped-time-adventures of the hero. If it needs a unifying theme, it is a fictional autobiography of Arno Stine gifted with a supernatural power.”
“This is an amazing book: part literary fiction and part creepy porn. I loved it.”

I enjoyed the quirky things he did and how he sees himself, including that he could find something sexual about every woman (except Baker never includes a variety of women).
Fermata does contain sex--sometimes quite humorously--but it seems distant. Except maybe for when Arno writes "rot." Yet there is a broader picture of the character coming to terms with whether what he does is harmful or not, and how it is a gift others would use with unhealthy liberties. ”
