- Jonathan: The main character in the story. Jonathan is an only child, who becomes best friends with Bobby. Jonathan realizes he is gay from a young age and as he grows older, he moves to New York.
- Bobby: Bobby is Jonathan's best friend. Bobby had an older brother who died and eventually he is left taking care of his father. As a teenager, Bobby's father dies and Bobby moves into Jonathan's house with his family. Bobby becomes a baker, until he is forced out of Jonathan's parents house and moves to New York with Jonathan.
- Erich: Jonathan and Erich have a sexual relationship. Jonathan enjoys spending time with Erich, but does not want to admit it to himself or his friends.
- Rebecca: Rebecca is Clare and Bobby's baby.
- Alice: Alice is Jonathan's mother. Alice loves to cook and did not experience life as a young adult due to getting married.
- Clare: Clare is Jonathan's roommate and best friend. Clare is excentric and plans to start a family with her gay roommate, Jonathan. Eventually, after Bobby moves in, Bobby and Clare have a relationship and a baby together.
